Satnam Singh
Satnam Singh was a 26-years-old Army man during June 1984. He was posted in Assam when he heard about the attack on Darbar Sahib on the BBC radio. As one of the Sikh soldiers who spontaneously left the Army in wake of the attack on Punjab, he was apprehended and put under arrest in Binnaguri in West Bengal region of India and later taken to Sikandrabad in Uttar Pradesh. After serving their imprisonment, Sikh soldiers were dispersed across various regiments. He recalls being told that in order to serve again, these Sikhs must work as sepoys and would not be eligible for any promotions.
“We must not forget our history, doesn’t matter if you are a Gursikh or not, but we must always remember what happened,” he says during the interview with Living History Project.
