Avtar Singh

“I have never seen such unity within the Sikh community ever since the attack,” says Avtar Singh of the attack of June 1984. He was then an engineer working in a High Tech company. He found out about attack from a TV show, which was not broadcasting live, rather showing what led to the current situation. Avtar Singh did not learn about the extent of the damage for almost 4-5 days after the attack took place. He lived in Chandigarh at that time. The attack left Mr. Singh in great emotional distress and he wondered why his own Government had to take this step. He feels the attack however led the entire Sikh community to unite. “There were even demonstrations abroad… Many Sikhs felt they did not belong to India.”
