For Ajmer Singh, Sikh historian and writer, the sense of loss was palpable in June 84 following the news of the attack on the Akal Takht Sahib, bringing with it emotional memories from his childhood. When the news of the killings in November 1984 came to him through BBC, he could not gauge the full extent of the violence. Yet, it was only after he visited Delhi two weeks later that he was made to realize the political motivations behind the occurrences and went on to publish a report on the happenings through his Leftist organization’s monthly newspaper. He goes on to discuss how the events that transpired came as a turning point in his life by leading him to reconnect with his Sikh beliefs while moving away from the Marxist ideology he had previously subscribed to.
